The Dordogne

The Dordogne département (24) is found within the Aquitaine region of the southwest corner of France.

Most French people refer to the area as the Périgord, a name used for the region before the French revolution; the area changed its name to the Dordogne, after its river, in 1790.

It is is surrounded by the départements of Haute-Vienne, Corrèze, Lot, Lot-et-Garonne, Gironde, Charente-Maritime, and Charente.

The inhabitants of the département are called Périgordiens or Périgourdins after Périgueux, préfecture or capital city of the Dordogne

As Dordogne has become one of the favourite destinations of British immigration to France, Dordogne is often referred to as "Dordogneshire".

The Dordogne Climate

The weather is generally much milder than England - although frost can be severe and snow is not unknown.

The weather is warm from mid April through to October and November. Two thirds of the rain falls between December and March, the remaining third falling evenly throughout Spring, Summer and Autumn.

The summers are considerably hotter than England but the rainfall serves to keep the region fresh and green.

Tourism

Whilst a long time favourite with visitors, the region has escaped much of the over development of some of France's other regions. Tourism forms an important part of the Dordogne economy especially since access has been improved by low cost airlines flying into local airports.

It’s beauty is unsurpassed - rivers cut through limestone, leaving fantastic cliffs people have built around and into for thousands of years. Castles, chateau, and other important historical museums are sprinkled throughout the region. The stone villages in Dordogne, including Monpazier, Rocamadour, Domme and La Roque Gageac, are unbelievably picturesque. The market of Sarlat-le Caneda is just one of many remarkable markets in the area.

There are more than 1,000 castles and chateau in Dordogne, for more information see the tourist attractions in the Dordogne.
