Village of Sarlat in the Dordogne

The Principal Towns of the Dordogne

Perigueux

The capital of the Dordogne department and major town for "White Perigord". Dominated by its Cathedral St Front, Perigueux was built in a fertile valley and has a long history, which can be seen in its interesting architecture and roman remains. Perigueux is renowned for its gastronomic specialities, especially the black truffles and foie gras. It is at its most lively on the market days of Wednesday and Saturday.

Bergerac

Major town for "Purple Perigord". An attractive market town developed around the first bridge over the Dordogne. Once an important port for the wine trade it still serves as a hub for maize, vine and tobacco production. The old quarter and the old harbour are particularly enchanting boasting late-medieval houses and drinking fountains on street corners.

Nontron

Major town for "Green Perigord". Situated in the north of the Dordogne near to its border with the Charente to the north-west, Haute-Vienne to the north-east and Corres to the east and in the middle of the Perigord-Limousin regional natural park. The town is noted for its historic workshops where hand-crafted knives have been produced since 1653. There is a market every Saturday and festivals in the town throughout the summer.

Sarlat-la-Canéda

Major town for "Black Perigord" and renowned as the most attractive medieval town in France. Sarlat was founded around a Benedictine monastery in the 9th century and is a well-preserved ancient town with cobbled side streets and beautiful architecture. Market days are on Wednesday and Saturday, with Saturday’s market being particularly splendid.

Attractions in the Dordogne

Whilst a long time favourite with visitors, the region has escaped much of the over development of some of France's other regions. It's beauty is unsurpassed - rivers cut through limestone, leaving fantastic cliffs people have built around and into for thousands of years. Castles, chateau, and other important historical museums are sprinkled throughout the region. The stone villages in Dordogne, including Monpazier, Rocamadour, Domme and La Roque Gageac, are unbelievably picturesque. The market of Sarlat-le-Caneda is just one of many remarkable markets in the area.

There are more than 1,000 castles and chateau in Dordogne, including:

  • Beynac
  • Biron
  • Bourdeilles
  • Castelnaud
  • Commarque
  • Fenelon
  • Herm
  • Hautefort
  • Jumilhac
  • Milandes
  • Monbazillac
  • Pecany
The famous caves of Lascaux are a major tourist attraction. Perigueux has important Roman ruins, including an arena which is still visible inside a public park located near the town centre.
